One of our favourite moments last week was seeing One of our favourite moments last week was seeing this Southern Right Whale breach. 💙

Between 1830 and 1850, the Tasmanian whaling industry was at its peak. While narratives often described the whales as awe inspiring creatures, it was not uncommon either for whales to be depicted as gruesome monsters of the sea with horns and sharp teeth and ramming boats.

In reality, humans hunted the Southern Right and other whale species, usually by throwing harpoons at the whales which had lines attached to gradually tire the animal. Once weakened, the whalers would approach the exhausted whale and deliver fatal blows using long-handled lances to pierce its vital organs. The whales were then towed back to the whaling station for processing.

The number of Southern Right Whales declined significantly and by the 20th century, their population had been reduced to critically low levels. It is difficult to determine the exact number, but it is estimated that only a few hundred individuals remained.

Fast forward to today, Southern Right Whales remain on the endangered species list with an estimated number of a few thousand individuals. They are fortunately considered now as gentle giants that play a crucial role in our ecosystem. 💙

As Dark Mofo paints the town red, away from the cr As Dark Mofo paints the town red, away from the crowds, awakening from the frigid embrace of Antarctic waters, the humpback whales begin their pilgrimage, guided by an ancient call that reverberates within their souls.

Silent solitudes transform into vibrant tapestries as the sun’s golden touch caresses the ocean’s skin. Their path, a celestial highway painted with constellations of purpose, unfolds before them. Each surge of their colossal flukes propels them forward, drawing them closer to the cherished havens of life’s continuance. It is a pilgrimage of generations, a timeless ritual passed through the watery annals of ancestry.

Upon reaching the realm of their desires, they bask in the fertile embrace of subtropical realms. A sanctuary of warmth and nourishment awaits, where the whispers of love mingle with the azure skies. In this hallowed sanctuary, bonds are forged, tales of passion and devotion etched in the heartbeats of time.

Oh. My. Goodness! We got so spoilt with wildlife e Oh. My. Goodness! We got so spoilt with wildlife encounters on our tours today! 💙 We had a cruisey pair of Southern Right Whales, five Humpback Whales that were charging up the coast and appeared to be in a heat run, playful dolphins and cute seals. The sun was out, it was epic! ☀️

Remember, if you see Humpback Whales and manage to capture a photo of the underside of their flukes, you can send it through to us or upload it to Happywhale.com and help with whale research. 🙏
‘Wallowing unwieldy, enormous in their gait Tem ‘Wallowing unwieldy, enormous in their gait

Tempest the ocean: there leviathan

Hugest of living creatures, on the deep

Stretched like a promontory sleeps or swims,

And seems a moving land, and at his gills

Draws in, and at his trunk spouts out a sea.’

- John Milton, Paradise Lost, Book VIII, 1667

A big surprise today - we spotted the first Southe A big surprise today - we spotted the first Southern Right Whale of the season on our 2+hour Scenic Tour, which then came over for a closer look. 💙🐳 (engines out of gear)

Humpback and Southern Right Whales are on the move again, so it’s a good time to familiarise yourself with the whale watching guidelines in your area.

‘The key principles for appropriate viewing of whales and dolphins are observing the recommended approach distances, and not touching or feeding the animals. The animal should be allowed to choose the nature and extent of any contact with people. If vessels are operated appropriately, the impacts of whale and dolphin watching can be minimised and you will have a more enjoyable experience.’

For centuries, the #Totempole at #CapeHauy has wit For centuries, the #Totempole at #CapeHauy has withstood the forces of wind, rain and wave action, standing tall and proud against the elements.

Its rugged, weather-beaten face is a symbol of resilience, endurance and perseverance.

Looking at it from the water perspective is a reminder that we too have the power to weather the storms of life, to stand firm in the face of adversity and to rise above our challenges.

Go out there and make your mark on the world! 💙
